Overview
Proper heading structure uses a hierarchical, outline-based format (Heading 1 to Heading 6) to organize content by importance, improving readability and accessibility.
Considerations
- Hierarchy: Start with H1 for main title, H2 for major sections, and H3-H6 for subheadings, never skipping levels. H1 should be used only once per document.
- Logical Outline: Headings should act as a table of contents, outlining the documents' structure.
- Accessibility: Screen readers rely on these tags to navigate, making them essential for accessibility.
Typical Heading Nesting Structure
- Heading 1 (H1): Main Title of the Document
- Heading 2 (H2): Major Section
- Heading 3 (H3): Subsection
- Heading 4 (H4): Sub-subsection
- Heading 3 (H3): Subsection
- Heading 2 (H2): Next Major Section
- Heading 2 (H2): Major Section
