Summary: Papers of a family that moved to Eau Claire County from Massachusetts in 1857. Included are financial and land records, financial journals, grocery lists, genealogy, a hand drawn map of the farm, and correspondence.
Biographical / Historical Note
The family of Edgar Goff left Massachusetts and purchased land in the Township of Pleasant Valley in Eau Claire County in 1857. Edgar was a farmer until his death in 1894. Upon his death, Edgar’s son, Arthur W. Goff, inherited his property, where he lived with his wife and three children until his death in 1930. Arthur had a “truck garden,” raising fruits and vegetables that he “peddled” with his horse and buggy around the Third Ward in Eau Claire.
Content Description
This small collection consists of financial and land records, and financial journals of Edgar Goff and his son, Arthur W. Goff. Also included is the will of Edgar Goff, a brief history of the Goff family, a hand-drawn map of the farmstead, and grocery sales lists from the Staple and Fancy Groceries on Barstow Street in Eau Claire. The grocery lists, dated from 1878-1891, list items purchased, purchase dates, and prices of items. Of particular note in this collection are an 1876 contract, written by Edgar Goff, agreeing to a weekly payment for the service of sprinkling a street to keep down the dust in the second ward of Eau Claire from May to October, and letters from an inmate and the warden at the Wisconsin State Prison in Waupun from 1895 regarding a wagon of Goff’s that was allegedly stolen then traded.
