Biographical Note

Annie Marasic Liddell was born in Yadel, Austria on October 22, 1867.  She immigrated to the United States with her family in October 1874, settling in Eau Claire, Wisconsin the same year.  In 1878, the family moved to a homestead in Anson, Wisconsin.  She married Robert Liddell, a farmer, logger, and steel plant worker, and storekeeper, on June 23, 1885.  Annie Liddell bore at least eight children and worked as a camp cook and storekeeper.  From the late 1880s through the mid 1890s, the family moved frequently, settling temporarily in several small towns of northwestern Wisconsin.   In 1894, the family returned to Anson and ran the Anson Store with her husband.  In later years, Annie Liddell wrote for the Chippewa Herald.  She died in 1925 at age 57 in Anson.

Content Description

The bulk of the material includes originals and use photocopies of four of Annie Liddell’s diaries, dating 1906-1925.  While her entries are terse, they shed light on her daily work and social activities.  Some of the diaries contain business records relating to the store owned by the Liddell family.  The third diary also includes the minutes of the “Sunbeam Society,” apparently a women’s Christian aid group.  The collection also includes a composition book filled with what appear to be original poetry and prose works written by Annie Liddell and her children, a family bible with dates of births, deaths, and marriages, family obituaries, and a photograph album documenting the 1920s era teaching career of Ruth Balts Dressel, Liddell’s granddaughter.
