Overview
Machine captions are automatically generated for any new videos saved to My Media created after December 1, 2021.
Caption Label: These captions will be marked as “English (Autocaption)” to indicate their machine-generated nature and potential inaccuracies. Accuracy: Machine-generated captions are generally 83-87% accurate. ADA Guidelines: Captions should ideally be 99% accurate in spelling, punctuation, grammar, and timing.
Once automatic machine captions are edited for accuracy and clarity, the caption file label should be changed to signify the accuracy of the captions. When captions have been edited, it is important to change the label from "Language (Autocaption)" to "Language".
For example, a video that has been automatically machine captioned in English will appear as "English (Autocaption)". Once the captions are edited, the label should appear as "English" signifying the captions meet ADA standards.
How to change the name of a caption file:
There are two ways to change the name/label of a caption, or SRT, file. The first way can be done outside of the Closed Caption Editor. The second way can be done while in the Closed Caption Editor. Changes to the label and file name will appear under the CC button and the settings button within the video player. Editing the caption file label outside of the Closed Captioning Editor
Go into My Media through the Canvas Account icon. Once in My Media, navigate to the video you wish to change.
To access the caption file, click on the edit icon to the right of the video name.
In My Media, click on the edit icon, or the pencil, to access the editing tabs. You can also navigate to the Captions tab by clicking on the name of the video, and selecting "Actions" and "Edit".
Select the “Captions” tab found underneath the video player and under "Actions" associated with the video label you want to rename, select the pencil icon. This will allow you to edit the percentage of accuracy of the video captions and the file's name.
Under the captions tab, the following information can be found: The language associated with the captions, the label of the captions as it will appear under the CC button, the file type, the accuracy rate of the captions, and the actions you can perform, including the option to edit, delete, or download the SRT file.
Once the edit button is selected, the “Edit captions” popup will appear. Select the appropriate language for the video (the default is English) and adjust the accuracy rate to reflect ADA compliance (typically 99%). Within the label textbox, delete, add, or change the name of the caption file. For consistency purposes, change the label to "English" to signify the captions have been edited for accuracy and clarity.
Hit “Save” when all changes have been completed.
The label is the text that appears in the caption selector in the video player.
Editing the caption file label within the Closed Captioning Editor
1. Within the Closed Caption Editor, navigate to "Edit Details."
"Edit Details" is found on the left side of the editor window next to the language selector.
2. Within the Closed Caption Editor, adjust the accuracy percentage of the captions. Tip: ADA compliance dictates that captions are 99-100% accurate in terms of spelling, punctuation, grammar, and synchronicity.
Use the toggle to adjust the accuracy percentage for the captions. Click on the textbox to edit the Label.
3. Hit Save when changes are complete.
Please Note: To see the new caption label, refresh the My Media Page, then play the video. Clicking the “CC” button will enable/disable the captions. The caption label will appear under the settings icon. If the video is embedded within a Canvas course, these changes should automatically appear within the video player. If the video is already on your screen, please refresh the page to ensure the changes have been made. Caption changes may not appear within the V2 player previously embedded within Canvas. It is recommended that the video be re-embed to ensure captions are accurate.
