Known Limitation: Starting January 5, 2025, YouTube videos saved to My Media will no longer automatically generate or allow editing of captions.
YouTube videos saved to My Media before January 5, 2025 are not affected by this limitation.
YouTube videos saved to My Media because of an SSD accommation are not affected by this limitation. Instructors should continue to save their YouTube videos to My Media so professional captions can be ordered.
If you plan on using YouTube videos in a course, embed the videos into Canvas using the YouTube plug in. While these video captions may not be ADA compliant, they will at least exist in those videos. Please note: Ads will appear in the embedded YouTube video.
Overview
My Media offers a feature to "save" YouTube videos in your My Media multimedia repository and share/embed them like any other video saved within the file repository. This feature does not download the video; it makes a copy of the video and eliminates the ads associated with YouTube content. It also allows video captions to be generated and edited (prior to January 5th, 2025).
Considerations
If the original content creator deletes the video, the Kaltura version will no longer work.
Chrome is recommended for optimal playback of the Kaltura video.
Only videos marked as "public" in YouTube are supported.
Videos marked as private will produce an error of "Video unavailable: Playback on other websites has been disabled by the video owner," which means this video cannot be added to My Media through the YouTube integration.
Untitled videos may also produce this error.
The name and description of the YouTube video will automatically be generated during the uploading process. You can edit them to fit your naming conventions.

If you are saving a Kaltura version of the YouTube video into a PowerPoint, you will need to use the Kaltura video's URL. Unfortunately, PowerPoint does not allow for Kaltura videos to be embedded within a slide, so you will need to find and link the video's URL for it to be accessible on a slide. The Kaltura version of the YouTube video will open in a new internet browser tab once selected in Presentation mode.
