Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get permission to edit a specific site?
You are able to request access to a specific unit's intranet site by reviewing the required materials within this online course and then filling out the Request Intranet Site Access eform which is linked to in canvas course.
How do I use jump links / create a table of contents for a long page?
SharePoint creates anchors automatically each time a heading is added to a page. You can find the anchor by hovering over any content heading on a page. The URL of this anchor can then be used as a link in a table of contents, shared out via email, etc., to jump directly to that section.
I'm almost ready to go live with my site, but how do I give permissions to my site, so others can see it when it is live?
Please work with our SharePoint Admin(s) to get your site's access setup correctly. To contact our SharePoint Admin, please send an email with your request to: helpdesk@uwec.edu
What are the different levels of permissions available for my site?
By default, each site has three (3) levels of permission setup: Visitor, Member and Owner. Visitor is able to read / view the site. Member is able to add and update content on a site. Owner is able to make design changes to a site. If you require more levels of access granularity than this, please work with our SharePoint Admin(s) to get your site's access setup correctly. To contact our SharePoint Admin, please send an email with your request to: helpdesk@uwec.edu.
When to use a Document Library vs. a Folder structure?
Access permissions can be managed and applied to Document Libraries or Folders or specific files within the Intranet site. However, there are some advantages to applying access controls to a Document Library as compared to a Folder. Typically, site owners will want to use a Document Library if the expected users are different for the files within than other areas of their site.
Known Concerns
- Screen Readers: As of this writing, SharePoint functions best on Windows using Microsoft Edge browser and Windows Narrator screen reader. Other browsers, operating systems, or screen readers may encounter issues with navigating SharePoint pages. We will be working with Microsoft to explore alternatives.
- Pasting Links with Chrome: Pasting a link into a text area while using Chrome browser will often add a redundant underline format to the link. Many automated accessibility checkers will flag links pasted in this way as improperly underlined text. (Firefox browser does not have this issue.) When using Chrome to edit pages, it's recommended to manually remove the redundant underline from pasted links.
