Create Assignments

Last Updated

Except for online quizzes and graded discussions, most graded work should be created as Assignments. Assignments can be submitted online, on paper, through an external tool, or may not require submission at all.

Create Assignment

  1. Go to your course, click the Assignments tab, and click the + Assignment button.
  2. Enter a title in the Assignment Name field.
  3. Add instructions, a prompt, and any linked documents in the text box.
  4. Enter applicable points.
HINT: Use the Do not count this assignment towards the final grade option to give feedback and a potential score on drafts.
  5. Select the applicable Submission Type:
    1. No Submission - Use this option if students won’t submit anything in Canvas.
    2. Online - Students submit the assignment electronically.
      1. Text Entry – provides a Rich Content Editor box. Students type directly in Canvas or link a Kaltura video.
      2. Website URL – provides a place for students to paste in a URL.
      3. Media Recordings – allows media uploads and recordings up to 500 MB.
      4. File Uploads – allows students to upload files like Word, PDF, or PowerPoint.
HINT: You can restrict file types. Separate with a comma, no periods.
    1. On Paper – Reminds students to turn in a paper copy.
    2. External Tool—Submit assignments via an external app, usually an integration like Hypothesis, Cengage, or McGraw-Hill.
  1. Scroll to the Assign section and add applicable dates.

    NOTES:
    1. Due dates are powerful and place assignments on the student’s To-Do list. Due dates are also “soft” and allow students to submit past the due date but are flagged as late.
    2. Availability dates are not added to the student’s To-Do list. They are “hard” and do NOT allow for submission until the Available from date has passed or after the Until date has passed.
    3. If you leave all dates blank, students can submit the assignment at any time.
  2. Click Save to keep it hidden or Save & Publish to make it visible to students.
