Kaltura: YouTube Integration

Last Updated

My Media offers a feature to "save" YouTube videos in your My Media multimedia repository and share/embed them as you would any other video saved within the file repository. This feature does not download the video. It requires that the original YouTube video exists (in other words, that it cannot be deleted by the original content creator). Chrome is recommended for optimal playback of the Kaltura video.

It also provides a few additional advantages:
  • It removes advertisements!
  • It allows you to organize/bookmark YouTube videos along with other videos stored within My Media.
  • When shared through the My Media integration, it provides a consistent player for students to view.
  • It allows for professional captions to be added to meet ADA requirements for accommodations.

How to add a YouTube video to My Media:

  1. To save a YouTube video in My Media, you can access it in two ways:
    • Go to My Media through the Account > My Media in Canvas navigation --OR--
    • Find in the specific course the YouTube video will be added and click edit on the Canvas element (i.e. a Page, Announcement, Discussion, or Assignment) to show the rich content editor (seen in the picture).

Access the My Media integration using the Rich Content Editor found in Canvas.

2. To access the YouTube Integration within My Media, click the My Media icon (above), select the "Add New" button and drop down to YouTube.

The Add New button will appear in My Media or in the My Media Integration found within the Rich Content Editor in Canvas.

3. Check the box to agree to the terms and conditions (if prompted).
4. Paste the URL from YouTube into the text entry box.

Click on the textbox provided to paste the YouTube link and select Preview.

5. Click Preview to see the YouTube video.

IMPORTANT: Only public videos will be supported. Videos marked as private will produce an error of "Video unavailable: Playback on other websites has been disabled by the video owner," which means this video cannot be added to My Media through the YouTube integration. Untitled videos may also produce this error. If this error occurs and the video needs to be professionally captioned due to an ADA requirement for accommodations, please reach out to CETL (CETL@uwec.edu) for options.

6. Optional: Rename the video to make it easier to search within My Media. It automatically pulls in the YouTube description, which can also be altered or deleted.
7. If you are adding the video to a Canvas element, click on the blue </> Save and Embed button found in the top right corner of the My Media popup to embed the video -OR- If you are adding the YouTube video through My Media, click Save to upload the YouTube video.
8. Review the video in My Media or in the Canvas course to ensure playback is working as expected.

Additional Options

If you are saving a Kaltura version of the YouTube video into a PowerPoint, you will need to use the Kaltura video's URL. Unfortunately, PowerPoint does not allow for Kaltura videos to be embedded within a slide, so you will need to find and link the video's URL for it to be accessible on a slide. The Kaltura version of the YouTube video will open in a new internet browser tab once selected in Presentation mode.
