Outlook: Immersive Reader Tool (Read Aloud)

Overview

Immersive Reader (Read Aloud) allows users to listen to email content. It supports users with reading or comprehension difficulties and those who speak English as a second language.

Considerations

• This tool does not read metadata (e.g., it does not announce headings as headings).
• It is useful for checking the reading order.
• The Read Aloud feature is not available in the Outlook Mac desktop app. Mac users should use Outlook 365 (Web) to check the reading order.

Accessing the Immersive Reader Tool

Windows (PC App)

1. Go to File > Options > Accessibility.
2. Under Application display options, select Show Read Aloud.
3. Go to the Home tab.
4. Select Immersive Reader.
5. Use the on-screen controls to adjust voice, speed, and playback.

Outlook 365 (Web)

1. Select the View tab.
2. Open the email you want read aloud.
3. Select Read Aloud.
4. Use the on-screen controls to adjust voice, speed, and playback.
