Overview
This article explains how to require respondents to enter a written response when using a "Write-in" option in a Qualtrics question. This ensures that if someone selects the write-in choice, they must type in the text box before moving on or submitting the survey.
Considerations
- Requires access to Qualtrics survey editor
- Only applies to questions with a "Allow Text Entry" option enabled
- "Force response" allies only to the text entry, not the whole question
- Works best for validation when additional detail is required
Steps
- Open your survey in Qualtrics.
- Locate the question with a "Write-in" option.
- Click the "Write-in" option, then the dropdown menu that appears.

- Select "Allow Text Entry"
- Open the dropdown menu again.
- Click "Text Entry Validation"
- Select "Force Response"

Tip
Use this feature when you want to prevent blank "Other" responses and ensure meaningful data collection.
