Qualtrics: Creating Repeating Questions

Last Updated | Permalink

Overview

Use this guide to create a Qualtrics survey that dynamically repeats questions based on a respondent's earlier answer. This is helpful when the number of responses required varies by person, allowing the survey to automatically present the same questions the appropriate number of times.

Considerations

Create the First Question

  1. Open your survey in Qualtrics
  2. Create a new question and set the question type to "Text Entry"
Screenshot of an “Edit question” menu with “Text entry” selected and outlined in red among several question-type options.
  3. Enter the question text
  4. Select "Add Validation"
Form settings panel showing response requirements, with validation enabled.
  5. Choose "Custom Validation"
Screenshot of a “Response requirements” menu with validation enabled and the “Custom” dropdown option highlighted.
  6. In the first dropdown, select the question itself

  7. Set the first condition to "Greater Than or Equal To"
Screenshot of a custom validation form with the comparison dropdown open and “Is Greater Than or Equal to” highlighted in red.
  8. Enter the minimum number allowed
  9. Select the + button to add a second condition
Custom validation interface showing a condition that Question 1 is greater than or equal to 1, with minus and highlighted plus controls.
  10. Set the second condition to "Less Than or Equal To"
Screenshot of a conditional-rule form with the “Is Less Than or Equal to” dropdown option highlighted and outlined in red.
  11. Enter the maximum number allowed
  12. Create an error message that will appear if a respondent enters a value outside the allowed range
  13. Select "Save"

Create the Loop & Merge Question

  1. Select "Add Block" below the first question
  2. In the new block, select "Add New Question"
  3. Choose "Text Entry"
Question-type menu with “Text entry” selected and an “Add new question” button highlighted below.
  4. Select the block containing the question(s) you want to repeat
  5. Open the block options and select "Loop & Merge"
Settings panel showing “Loop & merge” highlighted with a red rectangle under “Block behavior.”
  6. Enable "Loop & Merge"
  7. Select "Loop Based on a Question"
Screenshot of a Loop & Merge settings panel with looping enabled, a checked loop-based-on-question option, a two-column five-row table, and loop-order controls.
  8. Choose the first question you created
Form interface with an open question dropdown highlighting “Q1 Question 1,” outlined in red.
  9. Select "Numeric Response"
Form interface showing loop settings, with “Numeric Response” selected in an open dropdown and the maximum loops set to 5.
  10. Enter the maximum number of loops allowed. This should match the maximum value permitted in the validation settings of the first question
  11. Select "Save"

The questions in this block will now repeat based on the number entered in the first question.

Note: This works with other question types for either question, such as multiple choice, as long as the same numbers that are your minimums and maximums for loop quantities are included as answers in the first question.
