Overview
Use this guide to create a Qualtrics survey that dynamically repeats questions based on a respondent's earlier answer. This is helpful when the number of responses required varies by person, allowing the survey to automatically present the same questions the appropriate number of times.
Considerations
- Additional display and/or skip logic may interfere with the loop and merge feature
Create the First Question
- Open your survey in Qualtrics
- Create a new question and set the question type to "Text Entry"

- Enter the question text
- Select "Add Validation"

- Choose "Custom Validation"

- In the first dropdown, select the question itself

- Set the first condition to "Greater Than or Equal To"

- Enter the minimum number allowed
- Select the + button to add a second condition

- Set the second condition to "Less Than or Equal To"

- Enter the maximum number allowed
- Create an error message that will appear if a respondent enters a value outside the allowed range
- Select "Save"
Create the Loop & Merge Question
- Select "Add Block" below the first question
- In the new block, select "Add New Question"
- Choose "Text Entry"

- Select the block containing the question(s) you want to repeat
- Open the block options and select "Loop & Merge"

- Enable "Loop & Merge"
- Select "Loop Based on a Question"

- Choose the first question you created

- Select "Numeric Response"

- Enter the maximum number of loops allowed. This should match the maximum value permitted in the validation settings of the first question
- Select "Save"
The questions in this block will now repeat based on the number entered in the first question.
Note: This works with other question types for either question, such as multiple choice, as long as the same numbers that are your minimums and maximums for loop quantities are included as answers in the first question.
