Overview
Adding a YouTube video to MyMedia is a simple process. This guide demonstrates how to add a YouTube video to MyMedia that can be shared using a URL or embedded within a course.
Considerations
- To save time with course design, YouTube videos can also be added through the MyMedia integration found in the Canvas Rich Content Editor (RCE). The steps below are consistent with the RCE integration.
- Ensures the user experience is consistent by having them use one player.
- YouTube videos need to be a part of the public domain. Videos marked Private or Unlisted will not be accepted.
- Videos marked as private will produce an error of "Video unavailable: Playback on other websites has been disabled by the video owner," which means this video cannot be added to MyMedia through the YouTube integration.
- Untitled videos may also produce this error.
- YouTube videos saved in MyMedia will be automatically machine captioned. To meet ADA compliance, all video captions should be edited for accuracy, clarity, and equality. See the Closed Captioned Process guide for more details.
- As of December 1, 2025, YouTube videos saved in Kaltura are automatically machine captioned. Videos saved between January 5 and November 30, 2025, have not been machine captioned. Videos saved before January 5, 2025, are machine captioned. To learn how to reorder captions, please see the guide on Kaltura: Ordering Machine Captions for YouTube Videos.
- YouTube videos saved in MyMedia can be embedded and shared like any other Kaltura video.

Kaltura and PowerPoint Troubleshooting
If you are embedding a YouTube/Kaltura video into a PowerPoint presentation, you will need to use the link found in Kaltura/MyMedia. To include a Kaltura/MyMedia video in a PowerPoint slide, find and link the video's URL. The Kaltura version of the YouTube video will open in a new internet browser tab once selected in Presentation mode.
